LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
"Becky,
Since I have never met you or your family, I am not qualified
to pass judgement on your current family crisis. But as a former
LIP staffer I do agree that you should not be using the LIP name
for a story that we did not cover in the past. A great many decent
people put much effort into making LIP appear in print for 20+
years. I think LIP's memory deserves more than a one person
diatribe. According to your mailing address you don't even
live in Lancaster. We do. You live in Philly.
By saying 'oops, the acronym stayed the same' was simply
catty and lets us know that you only want LIP for what little name
recognition it still has. Why don't you call it 'Beckynews?' That's
what it is. A defunct alternative newspaper from another era is just
not the place for more stories. LIP had an admirable run through
many less than certain times. I think it is well past the time to let
it rest in peace.
Good luck in finding whatever help you truly need."
My Response
Right now this website is the only thing keeping me going.
I have good days and bad days. The bad days are when I
think about everything too much. I met a woman in similar
circumstances and she said for the first five years she thought
about it every five minutes. For the second five years she has
thought about it every 10 minutes. I am into my fourth year.
I sobbed when I posted the first incest story (To My Brothers
and Sisters).
I continue to try and understand how this happened. I
continue to try and understand how this was kept a secret.
I continue to try and understand the parents who could
do such a thing. I continue to try and understand their double
lives. I continue to try and control my anger. But then I think
of what they did to my brother and I get a surge of anger that
is hard to describe. The incest story will never leave the front
page of this website.
And now Im going to be brutally blunt. I think a lot of the
former LIP staffers need to get their self-righteousness under
control. Yes, a great many decent people put much effort into
LIP. Yes, LIP had an admirable run. Actually, an amazing run
for a non-profit, mostly volunteer paper with no money,
no resources, no equipment and the Lancaster Newspapers
constantly trying to put them out of business. I was a part of
that for several years. My brother and sister were part of it.
My father, ironically, was one of the founders of the paper.
I have only the fondest memories of working on LIP.
I happen to like the name and the acronym. No one owns
the name LIP. I wasnt being catty. Its more like get over
yourselves already. Its been 10 years. If you want the name
to rest in peace you dont have to come to this website.
That being said, former LIP staffers and anyone are welcome
to contribute to this website. I would like to print what you have.
You can contact me through email or my address is listed on the
Contact page (yes, I currently live in Philly and I have said that
from the very beginning.)
I look forward to hearing from all of you.
